Mammoth Cave N.P. Kentucky

Kicking my tour of every National Park off right with the World’s Longest Cave in Kentucky at Mammoth Cave National Park! The cave has been a tourist stop for hundreds of years. The rangers told stories of slaves mining gunpowder for the war of 1812, union and confederate soldiers stopping to see the cave during the civil war and the competition of private cave owners! Now the National Park Service operates and protects the park for the future.

During 2021 the only tour available was the Extended Historical Walking Tour. It was a self guided tour through the largest rooms of the cave. Rangers were stationed around the cave to offer information and to help if needed.

This was the perfect tour for me. I don’t enjoy long cave tours, so it was perfect to check out at my own speed. If you stop by Mammoth Cave, be sure to check their website and reserve your tour.

They also have great trails for both bikes and hiking, so if cave’s aren’t your thing you’ll still have plenty to enjoy in this beautiful area of Kentucky!

    Hi Laura,
Great to see you back at it! I always read your blogs with great interest! I also have resumed traveling. In late October into early November, I traveled to Portugal and really enjoyed it. Then last month in January I took a week to visit Medellin, Colombia, in South America! Do not believe the people who are afraid to travel there as it is a modern and incredibly busy city. I walked quite a bit and never had any problems. The hotel where I stayed was only about $57 a night and I had a room service meal that was about $20 total. The exchange rate from the dollar to the Colombian peso is very favorable right now. Take care and can’t wait to hear about your next adventure. I will be going to Alaska in July and will get to see Denali National Park there! I can’t wait for that trip!
